Plot summary
Doris lives in the same New York building as Felix Sherman, a meek book clerk who is trying to finish a novel. Her gentlemen callers bother him and his typing bothers her. After Felix complains to the landlord about her work as a prostitute, she loses her apartment and arrives at his door in the middle of the night. He had not wanted that to happen, and he lets her stay. Doris dares him to undress, and her laughing fit brings on hiccups, so she asks him to scare her. He dresses in a skeleton Halloween costume and jumps out; the noise draws the landlord and several neighbors, who evict both of them. Felix and Doris then move to the apartment of Barney, a friend and co-worker.

- Barbra Streisand filmed a topless scene for the film that was cut; she agreed only on two conditions, that George Segal alone be in the room and that she could kill the shot. In November 1979 the pornographic magazine High Society printed the cut frames, and Streisand sued it.
- Bill Manhoff's play was staged on Broadway in 1964-1965 with white actor Alan Alda as the "Owl" and black actress and singer Diana Sands as the "Pussycat", a pairing many later stage productions followed; the film version omitted the characters' interracial relationship.
