Barbara Bates
Biography
Barbara Bates was an American singer and actress who studied ballet while growing up in Denver and worked as a teenage fashion model before a beauty contest win took her to Hollywood. She signed with Universal Pictures in 1944 and soon appeared among the Seven Salome Girls in Salome, Where She Danced (1945). After bit parts and a contract with Warner Bros., she played opposite Bette Davis in June Bride and Danny Kaye in The Inspector General (1949). Her best-known role came in All About Eve (1950), as the schemer Phoebe, whose appearance in the film's closing scene drew praise from The Hollywood Reporter. She went on to Cheaper by the Dozen (1950) and The Caddy (1953), and starred on the NBC sitcom It's a Great Life from 1954 to 1956. Her last film was Apache Territory (1958), and she made a final television appearance in 1962.

First role
After Cecil Coan brought her to the attention of producer Walter Wanger, Bates put her name to a Universal Pictures contract in September 1944 at 19 years old. The 1945 drama Salome Where She Danced then gave her a role among the "Seven Salome Girls."
Big break
In late 1949, Bates tried out for the small part of Phoebe in Fox's All About Eve. Zsa Zsa Gabor and others also competed, but Bates impressed the producers and got the role.
A role that slipped away
Bates refused to make the trip to New York City to promote The Inspector General, and in 1949 Warner Bros. ended her contract because of it.
