Plot summary
Logan Cates is a drifter crossing Apache country in Arizona. At a watering hole he sees Apache about to attack three cowboys and fires warning shots so they can get away. Later he meets Junie Hatchett, whose parents were tortured and murdered. He brings her to a box canyon that can be defended and holds water, where Lonnie Foreman, the only survivor of the group Cates warned, has taken shelter. A small band of cavalrymen arrives, along with Cates's former girlfriend Jennifer Fair and her fiancé Grant Kimbrough. On the first night a Pima Indian named Lugo slips in looking for water, and though the United States wants him for an officer's murder, Cates lets him stay because he hates the Apache. Lonnie and Junie grow attached to one another, and the Apache lay siege to the canyon.
