Plot summary
Dan Brady works as an auto mechanic at a garage in California. He takes twenty dollars from the cash register there to pay for a date with Vera Novak, who works at a nearby diner. The garage bookkeeper arrives earlier than scheduled, so Dan cannot put the money back in time. To cover the difference he pays a dollar down on a hundred dollar wristwatch, signs a contract to pay the rest in installments, and pawns the watch for thirty dollars, recovering most of what he took. The next day an investigator tells him that pawning a watch he does not own breaks the contract. Dan must pay the jewelry store the full hundred dollars within a day or face a grand larceny charge. He is refused a payday loan and cannot raise money on his car.
