Andrew Duggan

Biography

American character actor Andrew Duggan, born in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, worked on stage, in films, and on television. He appeared on Broadway in plays such as The Rose Tattoo, Fragile Fox, and The Third Best Sport. From 1949 to 1987 he accumulated around 70 film credits and more than 140 television roles, often playing authority figures: sheriffs, wardens, doctors, professors, judges, generals, and three turns as U.S. president. His films included Seven Days in May (1964), The Chapman Report (1962), Merrill's Marauders (1962), In Like Flint (1967), Black Caesar (1973), and A Return to Salem's Lot (1987). On television he portrayed Cal Calhoun on Bourbon Street Beat, Murdoch Lancer on Lancer, and John Walton in The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971). He also provided narration and voice-over work, among it a Clio Award-winning Ziebart commercial in 1985.

A change of course
During World War II, Duggan was in the Army's 40th Special Services Company, which actor Melvyn Douglas led in the China Burma India Theater. Meeting Douglas there later opened the way for Duggan to act alongside Lucille Ball in Dreamgirl.
A role that slipped away
Duggan played John Walton in the 1971 television film The Homecoming: A Christmas Story, but Ralph Waite took the role in the series it inspired, The Waltons.
