Plot summary
Joe Weber works as an anthropologist in South America when his ex-wife, Sally, calls him back to the United States. Their son Jeremy, an adolescent, faces commitment to a psychiatric institution unless Joe intervenes, so Joe takes custody of the boy. He decides to bring Jeremy to the Maine town where he was born, where a rundown farmhouse his deceased Aunt Clara left him still stands. Salem's Lot is a vampire colony, and its mayor, Judge Axel, appeals to Joe's anthropology. He wants the community given mainstream exposure and, in time, a religious text for its people. Axel shows Joe the town and explains why the locals now feed mostly on the blood of dairy cows. Joe stays to renovate the house.

- Cohen agreed to make a film for Warner Bros.' video division only on condition that the studio pay for two films shot back-to-back; the pair were It's Alive III: Island of the Alive and A Return to Salem's Lot.
- Recalling the shoot in Peacham, Cohen said the townspeople gave him the entire town; he disrupted normal activities for several weeks, shot late into the night, and recruited residents as extras and their children to play young vampires.
- Cohen's draft screenplay for the 1979 Salem's Lot miniseries was rejected by Warner Bros.; years later he proposed a sequel that only loosely used Stephen King's novel, writing it under the influence of Thornton Wilder's play Our Town.
