Plot summary
Brigadier generals from the American, British and French armies are captured in a sauna while arguing over military tactics, a public relations disaster for the Allies. Held in an Italian villa under Colonel Ferrucci, they all carry the same rank, so no one is in command and their escape planning goes nowhere. Allied headquarters picks Harry Frigg, a private with a long history of escaping from military stockades, and promotes him to Major General so he outranks the prisoners. Parachuted behind enemy lines, he lets himself be captured and is locked up in the same villa. The brigadiers doubt his rank until he recites details about them that no junior officer could know.
