Plot summary
Tate Kimbrough is about to marry Lucy Summerton in Sundown, the town whose politics and business he controls, and the citizens go along with him out of fear and self-interest. On that day Bart Allison arrives with his friend Sam, blaming Kimbrough for the death of his wife Mary and intending to kill him. Lucy's father objects to the time Kimbrough spends with Ruby James, who insists on attending the wedding. In the saloon, Bart refuses drinks bought in honor of the occasion. He breaks up the ceremony and promises to kill Kimbrough before the day ends. The townspeople chase him, and he and Sam take shelter in the livery stable. Lucy drives off in her wedding dress and will not go on with the ceremony.
