Plot summary
September 1941 brings Pearl Harbor closer, and Henry Limpet, a bookkeeper, tries to enlist in the Navy. Poor eyesight and other problems get him classified 4F, though his wife Bessie is fiercely patriotic. His friend George Stickle, a machinist's mate on leave, comes to visit, and the three of them go to Coney Island, where Henry falls into the water and becomes a fish. Because he could not swim and does not resurface, Bessie and George assume he drowned. The fish Limpet keeps his pince-nez spectacles, makes friends with Crusty, a hermit crab, and finds a powerful underwater roar, his thrum.

- Jim Carrey entered negotiations to star in a remake by 1997 and was confirmed in February 1998, with Steve Oedekerk hired as writer and director, and roughly $10 million was spent on animation tests to digitally map Carrey's motion-captured human face onto a fish's body, which produced disastrous results.
- The film had its premiere on January 20, 1964, at the Weeki Wachee Springs Underwater Theater in Spring Hill, Florida, more than two months before it went into general release on March 28, 1964.
- The Incredible Mr. Limpet was the final project to be produced and finished at Warner Bros. Cartoons prior to that studio's closure in May 1963.
- The Coney Island pier, the naval scenes and the other aquatic scenes were filmed on Stage 16 at the Warner Bros. Studio, in a tank that holds two and a half million gallons, or nine and a half million liters, of water.
- Richard Linklater was announced as director of the long-delayed remake in January 2014, with Galifianakis reportedly playing the lead; on July 8, Jon Hamm, Danny McBride, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Hart, Josh Gad, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele entered talks for roles, before Linklater left for Everybody Wants Some!!
- Two of the film's actors never appeared on screen again: this was the last film of Larry Keating and Charles Meredith, and both died not long after it was finished.
