Plot summary
Rick Riker is a student at Empire High School, unpopular and unlucky, sharing a home with Uncle Albert and Aunt Lucille. His best friend is Trey, and he has a crush on Jill Johnson, who dates the bully Lance Landers. Rick's class takes a trip to a lab where animals are researched, run by Lou Landers, a terminally ill businessman and Lance's uncle. There Rick is drenched in animal-attraction liquid, and a dragonfly altered by chemicals bites his neck. Lou's machine, built to cure illness, restores his health when he tests it on himself, but it requires draining a victim's life energy daily. Facing murder charges, he becomes the villain Hourglass.
