Plot summary
In London, auctioneer Simon Newton takes part in a heist on the auction house where he works, helping Franck and his gang take a valuable painting. The robbery goes wrong when Franck strikes Simon on the head, and the package the gang escapes with holds only an empty frame. Seeking the painting, Franck and his men seize Simon and torture him, then learn that the blow left him with amnesia: he cannot remember where the painting went. Franck turns to hypnotherapy, and Simon picks Elizabeth Lamb from a directory of practitioners. Booking a session under a false name, he claims he is trying to recover lost keys. Elizabeth sees through the story, and the gang must negotiate with her over a share of the painting's sale.

- In May 2011 Michael Fassbender was cast as Franck but dropped out over scheduling conflicts, and Colin Firth was considered before Cassel took the part. Scarlett Johansson, Melanie Thierry and Zoe Saldaña were all considered for the role that went to Dawson.
- McAvoy almost turned down the part because Simon seemed to be a victim, which did not interest him, but about 15 or 20 pages into the script he sensed something else coming in the character, and then something new came about every 10 pages until he was hungry to play it.
- Boyle called this 'the first time I put a woman at the heart of a movie'. He had originally intended to set it in New York City, but it was filmed in London and Kent instead because his Olympic ceremony duties meant he had to stay in the United Kingdom.
- Smith said that after finishing the Opening Ceremony he hardly knew what day of the week it was and took a month off work and music. Exactly one month and three days after they said goodbye in the stadium, a text from Danny arrived about Trance, and two minutes later he was on board.
