Plot summary
Rachel Armstrong covers politics for the Capital Sun-Times in Washington, D.C. She is preparing a story that the Lyman administration misled Congress and the public when it blamed Venezuela for the shooting of the President, and that a CIA report found no Venezuelan link. The story names the operative behind that report, Erica Van Doren, whose daughter Alison goes to school with Rachel's son Timmy. Rachel approaches Van Doren at a soccer match for confirmation, and Van Doren refuses to cooperate. Backed by her editor Bonnie Benjamin and the paper's lawyer Avril Aaronson, Rachel publishes. A special prosecutor, Patton Dubois, brings the leak before a grand jury and demands that Rachel name her source. She gives no answer, and attorney Albert Burnside is brought in to defend her.

- Writer-director Rod Lurie based the screenplay on the case of journalist Judith Miller, who was jailed in July 2005 for refusing to name her source to a federal grand jury investigating the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity, though he turned it into a mostly fictional story.
- Real-life attorney Floyd Abrams, who had represented The New York Times and Judith Miller in the actual Valerie Plame grand jury case, was hired as a consultant on the film and ended up cast by Rod Lurie as Judge Hall after Lurie was impressed by his demeanor.
