Plot summary
Anastasia Steele, an English literature student at Washington State University Vancouver, takes the place of her sick roommate Kate Kavanagh to interview Christian Grey, a billionaire entrepreneur and the university's commencement speaker, for the college paper. At his Seattle headquarters the meeting is awkward, but Christian takes an interest in her and turns up at the hardware store where she works, offering a photo shoot for the article. He asks her to coffee, then tells her he is not the man for her. After graduation, Ana calls him from a bar and he brings her to his hotel. As their romance begins, he asks her to sign a nondisclosure agreement, says he is a dominant, and shows her a playroom.

- Malaysia's Film Censorship Board denied the film a certificate for its "unnatural" and "sadistic" content, with chairman Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid calling it "more pornography than a movie"; it was also banned in Indonesia, Kenya, the United Arab Emirates, Papua New Guinea, Cambodia and India.
- Roughly 20 minutes were cut from the film for screening in Vietnam, leaving no sex scenes at all, and the scene in which Ana is beaten with a belt is skipped entirely.
- Bret Easton Ellis stated that Robert Pattinson had been James' first choice for the role of Christian Grey, but James felt that casting Pattinson and his Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart in the film would be "weird".
- Charlie Hunnam was originally cast as Christian Grey, the 27-year-old billionaire and CEO of Grey Enterprises Holdings, but left the film because of his schedule conflicts, and Jamie Dornan took the part.
- Emilia Clarke was also offered the role of Anastasia but turned the part down because of the nudity it required.
- Paul Walker was also considered for the role of Christian Grey, but died in a car accident in November 2013.
- The film was shot under the working title "The Adventures of Max and Banks", and uncredited screenwriter Mark Bomback said he "had never been on a project with that much secrecy around it... The set was on lockdown".
- The film was the last project worked on by the prolific Academy Award-winning editor Anne V. Coates before her death in 2018.
