Plot summary
Enniscorthy, 1951. Eilis Lacey shares a house with her mother and her older sister, Rose. She works part-time in a grocery shop and goes to local dances with her friend Nancy, but the town holds no full-time job for her. Through Father Flood, a priest in Brooklyn, Rose arranges her passage to New York. On the crossing, Georgina, a fellow traveler, offers advice. Eilis takes a room in a Brooklyn boarding house for young Irish women and finds work at a department store, but she is homesick. Father Flood enrolls her in night bookkeeping classes at Brooklyn College, where she hopes to become an accountant. At a dance she meets Tony Fiorello, an Italian-American plumber, and as their romance grows she begins to feel at home.

- Despite the title, the production spent only two days filming in Brooklyn, one of them at the beach in Coney Island. The bulk of the shoot was three weeks in Ireland and four weeks in Montreal.
- A bidding war after the premiere drew Fox Searchlight, Focus Features, Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions, CBS Films and The Weinstein Company. Fox Searchlight paid $9 million for United States and some foreign rights, one of the biggest deals ever to come out of Sundance at the time.
- Colm Tóibín, the author of the novel the film is based on, appears as the man standing in line in front of Eilis the first time she goes through immigration in New York.
- The film's gross in Canada passed C$4 million, which gave it the highest cumulative domestic gross of any Canadian film released in 2015.
- Brooklyn grossed $38.3 million in North America and $23.7 million elsewhere, $62.1 million worldwide, against an $11 million budget. The Hollywood Reporter calculated its net profit at only $3-4 million.

The film changes the ending of the novel: in the book Eilis leaves Ireland but her destination and fate are left for the reader to decide, while the film ends with a reunion between Eilis and Tony in Brooklyn.
