Biography

Brendan Coyle is a British and Irish actor who trained in Dublin and then at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. In 1999 he won an Olivier Award for best supporting performance in Conor McPherson's play The Weir, and the same production's New York staging earned him a Theater World Award for outstanding Broadway debut. His screen work includes the 2001 film Conspiracy, in which he played Gestapo chief Heinrich Müller, plus the BBC drama North & South as Nicholas Higgins. From 2008 he was Robert Timmins in three Lark Rise to Candleford series, and in 2010 he took the role of valet John Bates in Downton Abbey, written for him by Julian Fellowes; it brought BAFTA, IFTA and Primetime Emmy nominations and three Screen Actors Guild Awards between 2013 and 2016.
