Plot summary
Alithea Binnie, a narratology scholar, is British and now and then hallucinates demonic beings. While visiting Istanbul she buys an antique nightingale's eye bottle and lets out the Djinn held inside it. He offers her three wishes, each of which has to be her heart's true desire; wishing for more wishes, for immortality, or for an end to sin and suffering is not allowed. She calls him a trickster and argues that wishing is a mistake, and she recalls the imaginary boy she invented as a child and the whole life she wrote down for him in a diary. In reply the Djinn tells her about his past and how he came to be imprisoned in the bottle.
