Plot summary
After her parents divorced three years ago, Ronnie Miller stopped speaking to her father, Steve, and gave up the piano she loved. She and her younger brother, Jonah, spend a summer with him in a Georgia beach town, and Jonah is delighted by the trip. Steve, a former Juilliard professor and concert pianist, lives quietly there and works on a stained-glass window, while people in town blame him for a church fire. Ronnie falls in with Blaze, a local outcast, and, to spite her parents, turns down a scholarship to Juilliard. While guarding a loggerhead sea turtle nest near her father's house, she meets Will Blakelee, an aquarium volunteer.

- Then-North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue set up a press conference on April 1, 2009 to announce that the state had won the film, but North Carolina tax collectors refused to consider the film rights, forcing Perdue to cancel the conference at the last second.
- The one-room, 2,000-square-foot church built for the film seats roughly 80 people and was estimated to be worth $250,000 to $350,000; special-effects coordinator Will Purcell subdued concerns about the burning scene by confirming the building would not actually be set on fire.
- Disney agreed to donate the church building to Tybee Island after local officials lobbied to keep it, on condition that its connection to The Last Song not be advertised; renovating it into a nondenominational wedding chapel was expected to cost about $600,000.
- The nest-hatching scene was filmed in the first week of August using 26 live loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings, and because hatchlings instinctively head for the ocean as soon as they are born, the shots had to be taken swiftly.
- Sparks completed the screenplay in January 2009, before he had even finished the novel, making The Last Song the first of his scripts to be optioned for film.
- Sparks' experiences as a father and as a high-school track and field coach helped shape the plot, and the characters Jonah Miller and Will Blakelee are based on his sons Landon and Miles.
- Miley Cyrus chose the name “Ronnie” for her character in honor of her grandfather, Ron Cyrus; the character had first been named “Kirby” by Sparks and was later changed to “Hilary” before Cyrus made her choice.
