Lesley Nicol

Biography

Lesley Nicol is an English actress who was born and raised in Manchester and trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama after leaving school at seventeen. She is known for playing Beryl Patmore in the ITV and PBS drama Downton Abbey, a role that made her a three-time SAG Award winner as part of the show's cast, and she appeared in the 2019 Downton Abbey film and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025). Her television work also includes Mrs. Beaver in the BBC's version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a recurring part on ABC's The Catch, guest roles on Supernatural and Doc Martin, and the voice of Scarf Lady in Sarah and Duck. On stage she created Rosie in the West End production of Mamma Mia! and played Auntie Annie in East is East, later reprising that part in the films East Is East (1999) and West Is West (2010).

Behind the camera
With pop music songwriter Mark Mueller, Nicol created an original musical drawn from her own life and career. Called How the Hell Did I Get Here?, it opened Off-Broadway in New York City in April 2022.

Nicol left school when she was seventeen and went to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and she graduated from it.
