Plot summary
Ian Gray is a graduate student researching the evolution of the human eye alongside Kenny and Karen in a laboratory. At a Halloween party he meets Sofi, a young woman whose face is masked, leaving only her eyes visible. She leads him into a washroom for sex and then leaves without explanation. Strange coincidences, among them the recurring number 11, steer Ian to a billboard displaying her eyes, and he recognizes her again on a train. The two become a couple, though his rational outlook and her spirituality stand in contrast. They decide on the spot to marry, then learn they must wait a day for the license. Karen calls Ian about a blind worm whose DNA could produce an eye, and he takes Sofi to the lab.

- At the 2014 Sundance Film Festival the film won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize, which recognizes films that depict science and technology. The win was Cahill's second, after his film Another Earth also won the prize in 2011.
- Although Fox Searchlight owned the rights to any prequels or sequels to his I script, Cahill decided to make I Origins independently and sell it at Sundance as he had with Another Earth; after the 2014 premiere Fox Searchlight ended up buying the film anyway.

I Origins was developed as a prequel to I, a screenplay Cahill sold to Fox Searchlight Pictures in 2011. He intended I to take place twenty years after the events of I Origins, once the repercussions of Dr. Ian Gray's discoveries take hold, as teased in the post-credits.
