Plot summary
Ypres, in Belgium, lies in ruins in 1916. Among the wreckage of the town, Captain Fred Roberts finds a printing press and decides to publish a satirical magazine, The Wipers Times, taking the name from the army slang for the place. The paper is produced under enemy fire, and it defies authority and gas attacks alike. The troops on the western front take to it, and the magazine proves a huge success. Its gallows humor is poignant and subversive, and the paper stands as a tribute to resilience amid overwhelming adversity. Roberts is also awarded the Military Cross for gallantry.
