Plot summary
In a British documentary, two historians look back at a different America. Judah P. Benjamin, the Confederacy's secretary of state, persuades Britain and France to join the war by presenting it as a question of states' rights rather than slavery. Confederate troops with their allies win at Gettysburg, and in 1865 Robert E. Lee receives Ulysses S. Grant's surrender. The Confederate States annex the North, and northern cities are burned and looted. Robert E. Lee, remorseful at the atrocities, advocates emancipation, while Virginia congressman and slaveowner John Ambrose Fauntroy campaigns to keep slavery. The Davis Plan, which Fauntroy oversees, brings slavery back to the former Union states and taxes northerners who own no slaves. In the documentary, Confederate historian Sherman Hoyle praises Confederate values while African-Canadian historian Patricia Johnson speaks for the enslaved and oppressed.
