Plot summary
Summer 2009. Four-star General Glen McMahon, known for his leadership in Iraq, arrives in Afghanistan to draw up a strategic assessment that would let the government bring the war to an end. He has latitude to write what he likes, provided he does not ask for more troops. McMahon and his team, among them Major General Greg Pulver, are sure the war can be won; they want 40,000 additional soldiers sent into Helmand province. The Secretary of State says no such surge is politically possible, and the assessment will not be looked at until Afghanistan's presidential election is over. Captain Badi Basim, a scholarly Afghan National Army officer, becomes McMahon's aide-de-camp, and he turns up in civilian clothes because his uniform would make him a target.
