The Best Movies of 1996, 30 Years Later
The movies of 1996, ranked by audience score and the weight of the vote behind it.
NetflixMovies.com

The films of 1996 lean toward crime, and toward people caught in decisions they cannot take back. Debts get arranged, cases get taken, habits get tested. Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet keeps to the castle and the ghost on the ramparts, while Star Trek: First Contact sends the Borg on a course for Earth. Between those poles sit quiet family stories and courtroom dramas, and the mood shifts from film to film more than the subject matter does.
The order rests on audience score, weighted so that thousands of votes count for more than a handful of enthusiasts. A film had to be feature length, released in 1996, and carry several hundred votes behind it.
The place to begin is Fargo, where Joel Coen turns a salesman's debt into a scheme and hands the investigation to a pregnant police chief. Frances McDormand plays Marge Gunderson, with William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi in support. Danny Boyle's Trainspotting belongs to Mark Renton, an unemployed heroin addict in Leith who decides the habit has to go, and Ewan McGregor plays him alongside Ewen Bremner and Jonny Lee Miller. In Sling Blade, Billy Bob Thornton directs and takes the part of a man who leaves the state hospital where he grew up for the Arkansas town he came from. A boy named Frank befriends him, and Frank's mother offers him the garage. Mike Leigh's Secrets & Lies gives the search to Hortense, an optometrist in London who was adopted at birth and goes looking for her mother. Brenda Blethyn and Marianne Jean-Baptiste lead the cast.
