Plot summary
Bishop Bilodeau travels to a Quebec prison in 1952 to hear the confession of Simon Doucet, a boyhood friend jailed for murder forty years earlier. Instead of confessing, Doucet has his fellow inmates perform a play about the two men's youth. It is set in Roberval, Quebec, in 1912, and the prisoners take the female roles. Young Simon carries on a romance with Vallier, while young Bilodeau keeps his own feelings hidden and urges Simon to join him at the seminary. All three appear in a school play about the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, Simon taking the lead part, and Vallier's mother, the Countess de Tilly, is one of the figures in the story the prisoners tell.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Lilies (1996)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- In Lilies, the shifts between the realist play and the prison setting are done with visible set changes: leaves are removed from the chapel floor after an autumn scene, and the final sex scene between Doucet and Vallier becomes a prison scene when their boat turns into a bathtub in the chapel.
- Lilies keeps the prison-play staging convention even in its realistic scenes: the female characters are portrayed by the male actors who play the inmates.
