Plot summary
It is 1813, and the South Essex's First Battalion has lost so many men in Spain that the regiment may be disbanded. Major Richard Sharpe and Sergeant Major Patrick Harper are sent back to England to ask why no replacements have arrived. The Second Battalion's rolls list more than seven hundred soldiers drawing pay, yet Sharpe finds eleven men at its barracks and recruiting going on all the same. An audience with the Prince Regent brings an introduction to Lord Fenner, who says the battalion exists on paper only, a way of paying scattered troops. Fenner sends Lady Anne Camoynes to sound Sharpe out. Sharpe believes the account is a lie and sets out to find the recruits.
