Plot summary

Jerry Maguire is a 35-year-old sports agent at Sports Management International. After the son of an injured player criticizes him, he writes a mission statement calling the business dishonest and arguing that agents should take fewer clients and treat them with more care. His employers send his protégé Bob Sugar to fire him, and both men hurry to call Jerry's clients. Rod Tidwell, a receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, is unhappy with his pay and puts Jerry through a long tirade before agreeing to stay; the rest sign with Bob. Jerry then tells the office he is starting his own agency and invites anyone to join him. Dorothy Boyd, a 26-year-old single mother, is the only one who accepts.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Jerry Maguire (1996)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Cameron Crowe wrote the screenplay for Tom Hanks, but took so long over it that by the time the film was ready to be made Hanks turned the role down, being more interested in directing That Thing You Do!; Woody Harrelson also turned it down.
  • TriStar received over $1.5 million in merchandise and marketing services from Reebok in exchange for incorporating a commercial into the film, but when it reached theaters the commercial had been left out and a tirade of "broadsides against Reebok" was included instead.
  • Everything Is Terrible! had over 40,000 VHS copies of the film as of 2023 and says its ultimate goal is to build a pyramid of them in the desert, the collecting driven partly by the tape's distinctive red VHS box design.
  • Janet Jackson auditioned and was initially accepted for the role of Marcee Tidwell before it went to Regina King, and the film still nods to her with a poster in Teepee's room and Rod Tidwell asking "What Have You Done for Me Lately?"
  • Songwriter Aimee Mann recorded "Wise Up" for the film, but Crowe used her simple demo piano version instead, finding her final version "too big for the scene it was meant for" and calling the decision not to use it "heartbreaking".
