Plot summary
In a Chicago apartment building, Corky, a lesbian ex-convict, has been hired to paint and do plumbing. The couple next door are Violet and Caesar, her boyfriend of five years, who launders money for the Mafia. While Caesar is away, Violet seduces Corky, and the two begin an affair. Violet tells Corky she wants a new life and needs her help. Caesar is holding more than $2 million that Shelly, an embezzler, skimmed from the business, and the money is to be picked up by the mob boss Gino. The two women plan to steal it and make Caesar think Johnnie, Gino's son, took it.

- The directors employed sex educator Susie Bright as an ad hoc intimacy coordinator to choreograph the film's sex scenes, and she also turns up on screen in a cameo appearance.
- Gina Gershon was injured during a scene between Corky and Caesar near the end of the film: she struck a gun from Pantoliano's hand so violently that she required stitches.
- The part of Violet was expected to go to Linda Hamilton, and Jennifer Tilly read for Corky and was looking forward to a role unlike her previous parts. When Violet became available and Gina Gershon read for Corky, Tilly agreed Gershon would make the better Corky.
- Executives at some studios told the Wachowskis they would be interested if the character of Corky were changed to a man. The siblings declined, saying "that movie's been made a million times, so we're really not interested in it."
- The original director of photography resigned, saying he could not film on the limited budget available and knew nobody else willing to work so cheaply. Bill Pope was hired instead, and he knew "a bunch of cheap guys" who would work within the budget.
- The Wachowskis asked Joe Pantoliano to watch John Huston's The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and focus on Humphrey Bogart's character in order to get at Caesar's paranoia, while Gershon's role was influenced by James Dean, Marlon Brando and Clint Eastwood.
- Bound was the last film John P. Ryan ever appeared in; it turned out to be the actor's final screen appearance before he died in 2007.
