Plot summary
In Woodsboro, California, Casey Becker is alone at home when a stranger calls. Their talk about horror movies becomes a game, and the caller says her boyfriend, Steve Orth, is tied up outside. Police and news media arrive the next morning. Casey's classmate Sidney Prescott is close to the first anniversary of her mother Maureen's murder. Cotton Weary was convicted of that killing. Sidney waits at home for her friend Tatum Riley while her father, Neil, is away for work. A caller taunts her about Maureen, and then the killer attacks her.

- Drew Barrymore asked for the smaller part of Casey Becker instead of the lead role of Sidney Prescott, and the filmmakers welcomed the switch, thinking that killing their most recognizable actor in the opening sequence would shock audiences.
- Rose McGowan almost missed out on playing Tatum when her agent asked for $250,000 rather than the $50,000 she was offered, so she had to audition twice.
