Plot summary
Tommy Basilio lives in a rented room above the Trees Lounge, the neighborhood bar where he spends his days with the regulars, among them Connie and Harry, who serve at the bar, the elderly Bill, who rents the room next to his, and Mike, who runs the moving company across the street. He lost his job at Rob's garage after taking money from the register, and Rob now dates Theresa, Tommy's pregnant ex-girlfriend. When Tommy's uncle Al dies at the wheel of his ice cream truck, Tommy takes over the route, though children do not buy from him at first. Theresa's seventeen-year-old niece Debbie, who says she had a dream about him, begins riding along. Debbie and her friend Kelly come to the bar and cannot prove their age, and Debbie says Tommy will vouch for her.
