Trailer

Plot summary

Izmer's Empress Savina holds a scepter that commands the realm's gold dragons, and she uses her rule to press for rights for the common people. The Council of Mages opposes her, and Profion, who leads it, plots to depose her and argues that she should not keep the scepter. Both sides need the legendary Rod of Savrille, which controls red dragons, a species mightier than the gold. Damodar, Profion's henchman, hunts it, while Savina sends her tracker, the elf Norda, after it. Ridley and Snails, two teenage thieves, attempt a robbery at the Sumdall magic school, and with a dwarf named Elwood they join the search.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Dungeons & Dragons (2000)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The production was the first feature film ever allowed to shoot inside Sedlec Ossuary, a chapel decorated by František Rint with the bones of 40,000 Black Death victims, used as the villain Profion's lair.
  • James Cameron considered directing Dungeons & Dragons right before making Titanic, but the deal collapsed because TSR could not put together a merchandising arrangement that satisfied 20th Century Fox, where Cameron worked.
  • Actor Marlon Wayans called shooting the oatmeal quicksand scene the worst thing he had ever had to do in a movie, saying growing up eating oatmeal in the projects made him never want to go near it again.
  • The film's quicksand effect was created by filling a two-meter-deep tank with 6,000 liters of Quaker Oats, the only thickening substance the crew found that would not sink, mounted on a scissor lift.
  • The eleven-minute climactic battle needed more than 280 separate shots and over 150 computer-generated dragons, forcing the cast to fight imaginary creatures on a blue screen stage during filming.
  • In February 2010, a readers' poll run by Empire magazine placed Dungeons & Dragons at number 39 on its list of the worst films of all time.
