Roger Hammond

Roger Hammond was an English actor who worked extensively in film, television and theater, with a career that began on stage in the 1960s and later leaned toward film. Born in Stockport in 1936, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after performing in drama at Cambridge, where he appeared alongside Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi. In 1963, he joined the Arts Theatre Company, and the following year made his television debut; his first film role came in 1965. He became known for costume dramas and period pieces, often playing clergymen, including the Archbishop in Richard III (1995), and the Chief Augur in Rome. His films included Edward II (1991), Persuasion (1995), The Secret Agent (1996), Solomon (1997), Bedazzled (2000), Around the World in 80 Days (2004), A Good Woman (2004), Keeping Mum (2005), Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj (2006) and The King's Speech (2010), his final film role. He died in 2012.
