Plot summary
Jean La Bête is a French-Canadian fur trapper. He paddles down wild water to a settlement to sell his pelts. A steamboat lands there, and the Trader comes to the port with Eve, his mute foster-child, for mail and supplies. The Trader owes La Bête money and has already spent it. To make up the loss, the Trader's wife offers Eve to the trapper for a thousand dollars. Eve cannot speak because of the shock of watching her parents murdered. La Bête buys her and leads her into the wilderness.
