Plot summary
In a New England parlor, the friends of the Widow Lawrence discuss what should become of her daughter Jenny, and a lawyer tells them the mother wanted the girl placed with her uncle John Lawrence, who had gone to the California gold mines two months before. Jenny sets out for California in the rush of '49. Her uncle has been killed by Indians, and "Black" Brown, a road agent hunted by the sheriff's posse, swaps his own clothes and papers for those of the dead man. In the mining camp of Strawberry Flats he passes as a rich man from Boston while still robbing stagecoaches and pack trains. Jenny reaches his cabin, tidies it, and leaves the slippers she embroidered and a card on the mantel to surprise her uncle.
