Plot summary
Cesar, the son of Don Diego de la Vega, is in Spain to complete his education. Showing friends his skill with a whip, he knocks the feather ornament off Don Sebastian's hat, and Sebastian will not accept his apology. A runaway bull interrupts their duel, and Cesar saves Sebastian's life, which only deepens his resentment. Queen Isabella, watching with her guest Archduke Paul, asks to meet Cesar at once. Cesar also meets Dolores, General de Muro's daughter, as she sits for a sculptor, and falls for her immediately. Sebastian, whose own family has little money, means to win Dolores and her fortune. At a tavern, the Archduke's flirting with a dancer angers the customers, and Sebastian locks Cesar inside.
