Biography

Jack Holt was an American screen actor, born in the Bronx in 1888, who worked in silent pictures and talkies, mostly Westerns. He entered Hollywood through stunt work and minor serial roles, then became a supporting player at Universal Pictures for Francis Ford, John Ford and Grace Cunard. His debut came in 1914 with Salomy Jane. Frank Capra cast him in Submarine (1928), Flight (1929) and Dirigible (1931). Younger performers such as James Cagney and Chester Morris drew more attention, but he continued to play leads, including Whirlpool and The Defense Rests opposite Jean Arthur. He spent years in modestly budgeted Columbia crime films, then left the studio after a dispute with Harry Cohn, who had placed him in the serial Holt of the Secret Service (1941). Later he freelanced in outdoor and Western movies, including Trail of Robin Hood (1950), and he appeared in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948). He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Holt argued with Harry Cohn, the studio chief. Cohn found him arrogant and gave him the lead in Holt of the Secret Service, a 15-chapter serial from 1941. Insulted, Holt walked out on Cohn and Columbia.
