Peggy Dow
Biography
Peggy Dow is an American philanthropist and former actress. Her Hollywood career at Universal Studios ran from 1949 to 1952. Born in Columbia, Mississippi, she moved as a child to Covington, Louisiana, and later studied at Northwestern University, where she performed in college plays and earned a degree from its School of Speech in 1948. After some modeling and radio work, a talent agent noticed her, and she appeared on television early in 1949. Universal then offered a seven-year contract. She made nine films, and she is perhaps best known as Nurse Kelly in Harvey (1950), with James Stewart and Josephine Hull, and she co-starred with Arthur Kennedy in Bright Victory (1951). Crime dramas came next, followed by starring parts in two family films from 1951, Reunion in Reno and in You Never Can Tell. She retired after three years and later supported libraries and other charities. The Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award is named in her honor.
