Plot summary

Valerie Bancroft returns home from a health scare, attended by a nurse. Her doctor tells her secretary, Marsha Jordan, and the family friend Dr. Harrison that she has only months to live, and Marsha urges that Valerie not be told. Restless under the rules, Valerie travels to California to rest, with Dr. Peter Kirk watching over her. Marsha meets Ricardo De Villa, who introduces himself as Rick, at the hotel bar, and he asks about her. Another guest warns her that Rick is interested in Valerie's fortune. Rick tells the dancer Fritzie Darvel, who is married to the watchful Don Darvel, that he has no money and may use Valerie to get some.
