Plot summary
City police close in on the building and on Joe Adams, who fires at them through the door of his top-floor apartment. The sheriff sends for reinforcements and puts snipers on the nearby rooftops while Joe, shut in his room, begins to recall the events that led up to this. He had met Jo Ann by chance; she works in a greenhouse, and both had grown up in the same orphanage. He followed her to a nightclub, where the magician Maximilian the Great was performing. At the bar he met Charlene, who had recently quit as Max's assistant.

- When RKO bought the rights to remake Le jour se lève as The Long Night, it sought to buy up and destroy every print of the French original; the film was thought lost until copies resurfaced in the 1950s and its classic status was restored.
- The Long Night was the first screen appearance of Barbara Bel Geddes, a springboard for her career; RKO then signed her to a seven-year contract.
