Howard Duff
Biography
Howard Duff was an American actor who moved from radio work during World War II into film and television. Born in Charleston, Washington, later part of Bremerton, he acted in Seattle-area theater before joining the Army Air Corps radio service, where he announced the drama Suspense. He played the private eye Sam Spade in the program The Adventures of Sam Spade. Signed by Universal, he made his film debut in Brute Force (1947), followed by The Naked City (1948) and All My Sons (1948). Leading roles in Westerns and films noir followed, among them Shakedown (1950) and Woman in Hiding (1950), and he later appeared in Private Hell 36 (1954) and While the City Sleeps (1956). On television he starred in the series Dante and Felony Squad and directed episodes of Camp Runamuck. Later films included A Wedding (1978), Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and No Way Out (1987), and he appeared in Too Much Sun (1990).

First role
Duff signed a long-term contract with Universal and first appeared on film as an inmate in 1947's Brute Force with Burt Lancaster. Jules Dassin, who directed that movie, then cast him in a larger part in The Naked City (1948).

After being cut from Roosevelt High School's basketball team, Duff took up acting in school plays and graduated from the Seattle school in 1932.
