Plot summary
Ronald Miller runs with the geeks at his Tucson high school, and his best friend Kenneth Wurman is content there. Ronald is not: he wants the popular crowd, and above all Cindy Mancini, the head cheerleader. Cindy borrowed her mother's expensive suede outfit for a Labor Day party and had wine spilled on it. To replace it she needs $1,000. Ronald, who spent the summer mowing lawns for a telescope, offers her the money as rent for a month of posing as his girlfriend, which he believes will get him into the in crowd. Cindy finds the idea unappealing and doubts it will work, and she already has a boyfriend, Bobby Hilton, away at the University of Iowa. She agrees anyway.

- The film's dances were choreographed by Paula Abdul, who also makes an uncredited appearance in it as one of the dancers.
- The film was originally titled Boy Rents Girl, and the title was only changed when the rights to The Beatles song of the same name were obtained.
