Plot summary
Seven-time Piston Cup champion Lightning McQueen is overshadowed by Jackson Storm, the first of a new generation of high-tech racers. As Storm wins and veterans retire or are replaced, Lightning crashes in the final race of the season. Four months later, he recovers in Radiator Springs and decides to keep racing. His sponsors have sold Rust-eze to Sterling, who sends him to the Rust-eze Racing Center. There he meets Cruz Ramirez, a trainer who dreams of racing herself. Sterling accepts Lightning's deal: win the Florida 500 and he can choose his future; lose and he retires. Sterling also requires that Cruz train with him, and together they begin preparing.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Cars 3 (2017)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Paul Newman appears posthumously as Doc Hudson in Cars 3, with the filmmakers using archived and unused voice recordings from the first Cars film and its video game adaptation.
- Cars 3 used a rendering mode called the Rix Integration Subsystem, previously used on Finding Dory, which let animation and rendering happen at the same time in a process called "hardware shading", so animators could see what a finished scene would look like.
- Dan Auerbach wrote and performed the original song "Run That Race" for the Cars 3 soundtrack, saying it was "about never giving up and always trying your best"; he built the song after the filmmakers showed him the story and some dialogue.
