Plot summary
During World War II, with young men overseas, Chicago Cubs owner Walter Harvey pushes his fellow owners to fund a professional women's league. Ira Lowenstein runs it, and scout Ernie Capadino travels to Oregon, where he watches Dottie Hinson catch for a dairy softball team. Dottie is content at home and waits for her husband Bob, who is away at the war. Her younger sister Kit, who pitches for the same team and feels she cannot measure up, wants out of small-town life. Capadino is not impressed by Kit's batting, but takes her along if she can change Dottie's mind, and Dottie agrees so Kit gets her chance. On the road they add Marla Hooch, a powerful hitter, and the recruits gather in Chicago for tryouts, where the Rockford Peaches fall under manager Jimmy Dugan.
