Plot summary
Brewster Baker races stock cars for a living and travels with his car on a trailer. In a small Texas town he finds the car stripped for parts and chases the thieves until their van goes into a river. He pulls them out and learns they are six orphaned children who steal for Big John, the corrupt county sheriff. The sheriff takes most of what they bring him and jails Brewster on charges that include larceny and speeding. The kids free him from the cell, and he takes them along rather than leave them behind. They know engines, and they begin working on his car.
