Biography

Lane Smith was an American actor who worked steadily in New York theater before his 1970 film debut in Maidstone. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, he trained at the Actors Studio and was recognized in its Hall of Fame. He played McMurphy in a 1971 Off-Broadway revival of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, then made his breakthrough in 1984 with Red Dawn (1984), Places in the Heart (1984), and the series V. He earned a Golden Globe nomination as Richard Nixon in The Final Days, a performance Newsweek praised. Later credits included Air America (1990), The Distinguished Gentleman (1992), My Cousin Vinny (1992), The Mighty Ducks (1992), Son in Law (1993), The Scout (1994), and The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000). On Broadway he appeared in Glengarry Glen Ross, winning a Drama Desk Award, and he played Perry White in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from 1993 to 1997. He died in 2005.
