Plot summary
At a fairground in Northern Ireland, a unit of the IRA abducts Jody, a Black British soldier, after Jude lures him away with a promise of sex. The unit holds him as a bargaining chip for an imprisoned IRA member and sets a three-day deadline. Fergus, a volunteer, is assigned to guard the captive, and the two men talk and grow friendly. Jody asks Fergus to look up his girlfriend Dil, a hairdresser in London, and check on her if anything happens to him. Fergus flees to London, takes the alias Jimmy, and finds work as a day laborer. He finds Dil at the salon where she works, follows her to a bar, and they begin to talk.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Crying Game (1992)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- American funding offers for the film fell through because the backers wanted a woman cast as Dil, doubting an androgynous male actor could pass as female; Derek Jarman then referred Neil Jordan to Jaye Davidson, who had never acted and was spotted by a casting agent at a premiere party for Jarman's Edward II.
- Costume designer Sandy Powell had such a small budget that she lent Jaye Davidson some of her own clothes to wear in the film, because the two happened to be the same size.
- The Crying Game went into production on an inadequate patchwork of funding, so the producers kept hunting for small sums to keep it going and the unreliable pay left crew members disgruntled.
- Boy George's recording of the title song became a comeback hit, peaking at no. 22 in the United Kingdom; the song had first been released in 1964 by singer Dave Berry.
