Ken Russell
Biography
Ken Russell was a British film director whose work in television and cinema was known for its flamboyant and controversial style. Born in Southampton in 1927, he began directing short films and arts documentaries for the BBC, including the admired Elgar (1962), and often made creative adaptations of composers' lives. He moved into features with French Dressing (1964) and found major success with Women in Love (1969), which won an Academy Award and brought him his only Best Director nomination. Other notable films include the historical horror The Devils (1971), the Who musical fantasy Tommy (1975), and the science fiction horror Altered States (1980). He also directed Gothic (1986), Salome's Last Dance (1988), and a segment of Trapped Ashes (2007), and occasionally acted, including in The Russia House (1990). He died in 2011.
