Klaus Maria Brandauer
Biography
Klaus Maria Brandauer is an Austrian actor and director who started out on stage in 1962. Born in Bad Aussee, he worked in national theater and television before entering films, and his leading role in István Szabó's Mephisto (1981) brought him international attention. He played Maximillian Largo in Never Say Never Again (1983), and his supporting part as Bror von Blixen-Finecke in Out of Africa (1985) earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win. He later appeared in The Russia House (1990), with Sean Connery, and White Fang (1991), and he played King Nebuchadnezzar II in Jeremiah (1998). He directed Seven Minutes (1989) and Mario and the Magician (1994), and portrayed Otto Preminger in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999). He also holds a professorship at the Max Reinhardt Seminar.

Sean Connery, who had played James Bond opposite Brandauer's Largo in Never Say Never Again, ended up with the role of Marko Ramius in The Hunt for Red October, a part originally intended for Brandauer.
