David Threlfall
Biography
David Threlfall, born in Manchester in 1953, is an English actor and director who trained at the Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre and made his screen debut in 1977 in Mike Leigh's The Kiss of Death. He played Archer in the Play for Today version of Scum, and his film work includes The Russia House (1990), Patriot Games (1992), Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) and Nowhere Boy (2009), in which he was John Lennon's Uncle George. On television he was nominated for a BAFTA for Paradise Postponed and played Frank Gallagher across eleven series of Channel 4's Shameless, from 2004 to 2013, also directing some episodes. For the Royal Shakespeare Company he took the part of Smike in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, winning a Laurence Olivier Award for best supporting actor in 1980, and his performance in Hangmen earned him a Tony nomination in 2022.
