Plot summary
Alan Desland deals in antique ceramics in Dorchester and lives alone. A business trip takes him to Copenhagen, where he needs clerical help and hires Karin Foster, a German-born secretary who speaks English, Danish and German. He is drawn to her at once and falls in love, though she says little about her family or her past. At a concert she weeps, and another time she kills a wounded seagull. When Alan says he would find it hard to marry a woman with a child, she is upset. Before leaving Copenhagen she tells him she loves him, and he proposes. In England his mother expresses concern that they know so little about Karin's background. Karin arrives, and Alan notices she fears the sound of children and the dark; she refuses to marry in a church.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- U.S. distributor Miramax sent director Gordon Hessler a list of eight scenes to remove, including the opening sequence in which Alan follows an unseen girl's voice to the swing; as a result, Meg Tilly, who plays Karin, refused to promote the film on release.
- After seeing Hessler's directors cut, which novelist Richard Adams loved, distributor J&M Entertainment ordered the film cut down for length and asked that the ending spell out Karin's guilty secret, which the book had only hinted at.
