Plot summary
Ben and Saoirse grow up at a lighthouse off the northwest coast of Ireland with their father Conor. Their mother Bronagh vanished after Saoirse was born, and the girl has not spoken since. Ben is afraid of the water and blames his sister for the loss. On Saoirse's sixth birthday Granny arrives, calling the lighthouse no place to raise children. That night the girl plays a seashell that belonged to Ben and finds a white coat of sealskin; in the sea she becomes a selkie. Granny carries the children off to Dublin, and on Halloween they slip away to make the journey home.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Song of the Sea combines traditional hand-drawn and computer-generated art in a naïf style, as other Cartoon Saloon films do, giving it a mostly flat, 2-dimensional look that still incorporates some 3-dimensional image modeling.
- The animation's imagery is composed in the form of watercolours, a treatment used especially in the backgrounds and in the narrative flashback scenes.
